Played here on Sunday, June 14. The course was extremely crowded and the starter seemed quite unorganized in getting groups off. It seems that in addition to the usual play, the next two days the course was hosting a qualifier for the US Amateur Public Links. So quite a number of tournament participants were there playing practice rounds before the tournament the next day.
Once we got started, play was incredibly slow. In fact, we timed the first hole and it took our foursome 26 minutes to play the first hole. We were behind a group that included 2 women that could not hit the ball more than ten feet each time. They also had a small child, about three years old, that was running around the greens as well. So it was painfully slow until they finally allowed us to pass on the 6th hole.
As for the course itself, it was not bad for a course that gets as much use as this one. The tee boxes were a little worn, but I thought the greens were in very good condition and rolling very true.
I don't think I will go back here on a weekend due to the crowded conditions. I would consider returning on a weekday, as the course is a good value for the money.

Played on the 18th (Thursday midday) Pace was good until we let a single thru at the turn then had 2 guys jump ahead of us a couple of holes later and joined up with the single and they were SLOOOOWWWWW. Yet another aggravation. No ranger all day.
Course and greens on good condition, but the greens are painfully slow. I usually like slow greens but there were slower than slow. No fun.
Bunkers were a negative also, hardpan pretty much.
As usual, the staff was great. It was hotter than the seven gates of hell, but I don't guess thay had any control over that:)

Course is looking fantastic, greens, fairways, and tee boxes are in good shape, bunkers still a little shabby, they are really working to make this course look good and play good. Pub Links qualifier was there last week. Played in 4 hrs touch slow for me but still good pace. This is a hidden gem, period. Girl in the grill way to slow, please pick up the pace. Great walking course if you can handle the heat.
I played two times on Saturday and Sunday..one was two or three weeks ago, and it was raining a bit so not many people were playing, so we went through very fast even though we were under a shelter due raining for 15-20min. Last week, it's very sunny, so the course was packed...and was a bit slow, not THAT bad though.
The course condition was quite good, one hole (handycap #1) was a bit challenging, due to water on both sides...
The pro shop could be a bit more polite..in fact, i arrived at the course 10 min late..but i gave a call 15min ahead of the tee time, as i was on the way, but i could be late ~10min, so if possible, could you switch my team to the next team or so? Wow, but the pro shop answered very cold, "No, you cannot be late, there is completely packed no room to switch", Hung UP... Wooo...what the heck...
Anyway, one of our team arrived already and he started first, and other three joined hole#2... Could treat customers more politely..
Need to put some Marshall to keep the pace.
other than those, all went smoothly..

Getting better every day. Greens are in great shape, fairways are green, you actually have turf under your ball, bunkers not too good so stay out, as always little rough around the edges but they are working on it. Old school golf course great for walking. Played as a twosome today walking 3hrs50, teed of at 12:20, I've never had a 5hr round but I'm sure it happens.

I wish there were more public courses around like Mystery Valley. From the staff, to the course layout and usual condition of the place, It has to be one of the best public courses in the state.
As others have said, it's a straightforward course, no gimmicks or unnecessary "gotchas". The greens are in fine shape and this is just a really enjoyable place to play.
If I have one knock, it's pace of play. I have had more 5 hour rounds here than any other place I play, and I'm talking WEEKDAYS. I don't even try to play on a weekend here. They are very active with leagues and stuff like that, which is nice if you're in one, but it can make for a tough tee time to get and apparently a significantly slower round.
So even though for that reason I don't play there as often as I would like, I love this course and highly recommend it.

Fairways are really starting to come into shape. There are places that could use some attention. Greens are perfect. Bunkers are bad. Tee boxes in good shape. If it wasn't for the bunkers MV would be great. Still the best value in atlanta for dekalb residents, and a good value for everyone else. It's a great walking course, straight forward no tricks.

Played on 4/10/09. Much better than the previous week (still hand sand on the greens). I have been playing here since 1984 and I love this course. Wide open fairways, big greens and good risk/reward holes. Greens are getting quicker as the the season heats up. Greens have always been a little hard, and the fairways a little thin, but you'll hardly get a bad lie if you hit the fairway. A real good test of shot making ability.

Teed of 920 done 1250 3some walking on thursday.. course was in decent shape..tee boxes were sanded which made footing spotty, fairways a little thin, bunkers in good shape, greens in excellent shape..it's a great value for what it is, a good old style municipal golf course.

This is my home course. While it isn't an immaculate, 5 star resort, for the price you pay, it is competitive enough and fun enought to be worth your while. The course is always in at least okay shape and if you are a DeKalb resident, you can't beat the price.

The previous review pretty much covers my experience at Mystery Valley last week as well, but I would add that this course has developed into the HOME of slow play. Even during midweek, count on no less than a five hour round. It's a shame because I love this course and it is in really good shape, even this time of year. The greens were a bit slow, but in good condition. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
This is a great public course, I just wish it was not so slow.
I played Mystery Valley on January 23rd. Given the recent cold weather the course was in very good condition overall and is one of my favorite layouts. The course is an excelelnt value for the money, but don't expect top notch service. The food stand is often unmanned and the starter box can be a bit chaotic on busy days. It was 60 degrees on this Friday, which brought out a bunch of folks, so by 1:00 they were out of carts for the afternoon tee times.
If you're looking for a solid course in good condition and can skip the frills this is a good choice for you.

I played Mystery Valley on New Year's day. The greens are in excellent condition. The course in in great shape. Very playable. The course will challenge your whole game. It cost me $41 in greens fees (with cart) Walking is allowed. This couse remains on top of my list for great value, great layout and great greens. I like to call it "the working man's Augusta National" It has a very basic club house that looks like a cafeteria compared to the "fine dining clubhouses" of pricier courses. But the main reason people go to this course is the amazing golf. Well worth the drive from east cobb.

This is a great course, my associates hope to have a tournment there March 2009.
Update since there hasn't been one in a while. Played 10-11-08. Course was in excellent condition, service was friendly, professional and the cart girl made several rounds unlike other places where you see her maybe once! On hole 9th hole they have a phone that you can use to place an order so when you finish the 9th hole you pick up your food at the club house grill and keep on enjoying your round. Course is the best in the area compared to the other courses (Southland). They have a chipping green, practice green, and driving range. Staff and starter was friendly. This is a great course, fairways are plush. Greens are fast and true. If people would repair their ball marks the green would last longer and look better. Great greens attract people to their course. The course is more open than tought. You have a couple of holes where you have to place your tee shots and the others you can let'em rip if your hitting them straight of coursr. Great course if your in the area for the price.

Played Saturday the 19th in the afternoon.
Walked on as a single and was on in 25 minutes. Clubhouse and starter were more than happy to accomodate. Snack bar is nice and saw the cart girl 4 times during the round (twice on the back - twice on the front). Very nice.
This is a public course that attracts a wide variety of golfers. You'll see mid to high handicappers like myself who play once a week and local youths who crush the ball and have really got some skill.
But you'll also see guys like the folks we played with on Saturday - beginners in the purest sense. Very likely to shoot 150 in a round and probably 4 putt every green. It was very cumbersome to play with folks like this and can really grind on you during your round. No marshalls were going around so there were no warnings and we did everything we could to speed up the play (including giving them all puts inside 10 feet!). Just a warning - you might get stuck with some players who are beginners and will likely make your round 5 hours long.

Played the course July 2nd during twighlight paid 24 dollars as a Dekalb county Resident. Back 9 was closed for airation of the fairways. Played the front 9 twice. Course is in good shape considering the drought conditions and watering restrictions n the area. Either way cant beat the value.

If you are a DeKalb county resident this course is a must play! Can't beat the price. DeKalb residents get a discount and 18 holes with cart only runs about $28 on weekends. Still cheap for none residents staying under $35. I played this course twice recently on 7/11 and 7/13. Course is fun to play and in descent condition. A few greens are in so-so condition but overall they roll true. Some of the tee boxes aren't in great shape and the bunkers were real hard so balls sat up in them without getting buried. Course from white tees plays about 6300 yards so it is a bit longer than some of the Gwinnett Courses I have played recently. Overall I haven't found a course here in Atlanta that beats the price for what you get. Definitely a must play!

Played 5/21 with my 14 yo son (he played for $14). Greens are excellent, not a lot of difficult breaks. Tee boxes need some greening up as well as the fairways. It rained hard the day b4 but the sand was surprisingly dry and playable. Good challenging course with enough hazards to make you play position golf. Range is not great.
