This is a georgeous course to play. Very challenging on some of the tee shots. The greens were in very good running condition. But this course has to be played right down the fairway. It's not very forgiving if you get off line.

What a great course to play! The greens are always in excellent condition and course plays true every time. The course boasts the fact that it is "the best finish in Michigan golf!" I would have to agree that the final three holes can match any other finishing holes at any course in Michigan. The 18th green is overlooked by a patio on the rear of the clubhouse which is freuquently used by patrons as you approach the finishing green. Watch out for the water in front of the 18th green, very tough second shot from the fairway if you have never played the course. Prices are very fair. Staff is always courteous.

One of the best courses on the east side of the state. Very well conditioned for the weather we've had so my complments to the management and the groundscrew. Great scenery from the tees, my favorite is hole #2, 180 yard par 3 with about a 50 ft. drop in elevation. Great hole. The last three holes are a challenge for anyone. Try playing them from the back tees once. All in all a fun but challenging place to play.

Played 7/3 @ 0704 for <$13 after cashing in my LMG yards. Service was great and everyone was paired up and moved along. Course played tough as always when wind is in play. The course was in pretty good shape with some soggy areas and the greens are pretty good. Ranger was out to remind everyone to keep pace. Did not see the cart girl until hole 13. All in all another enjoyable visit to Greystone!

I've played this course many times. In the past the course has been a favorite, but so far this year, the course is not in very good shape yet. The greens were very bumpy. The fairways were not as defined as usual on this course. All in all, the course still presents one of the best challenges around Detroit, with the 3 hardest finishing holes I've ever played. But they need to get the course in better shape now that the warmer weather is here.

I been telling myself i needed to play this course because of the great reviews it recieved, and the great price that you get with LMG. So i finally got out there and hit the course. Granted it was a rainy day, so the course was a litte soggy, but this was totally understandable. I felt that the layout of the coue was challenging and there were some great views and some difficult tee shots....even from the grey tees. Overall I enjoyed playing this course.....BUT, one thing i was bummed about was the condition of the greens. for a course that chrges around 65 dollars regular rate, I would expect the fairays and greens to be in great shape, and the just weren't. I know that technically it's still spring around here, but I have already played a couple of courses in this area that have dealt with the same weather conditions and their prices are far cheaper than Greystone, with exceptionally better greens and fairways. The greens at greystone just didn't seem "true". And any golfer knows that the greens are everything to a golf course. it could be the difference between having a good round and a horrible one because of the green conditions. it just looked like there were multiple kinds of grass in the greens and boy were they patchy. your ball could kick left or right in an instant because of the different patces of grass. so for the money i wouldn't play this course again unless i used a red flag rate and some yards. putting is everything in golf!!!!!!!

I'm going to write another hole by hole review as I don't see any here. I play Greystone a number of times a year. It's always in great shape. Beer girls are always cuties, and the clubhouse is very nice. They have a good bar where you can overlook 18, or you can sit on the patio for an even better view.

This may be blasphemy, but the last 3 holes aren't all they are hyped up to be and the 17th is downright unfair. More on those later. The course has a good variety of tee boxes, including a "hybrid" of grey and black tees, which is where this review is played from. They have a grass range, although it always seems to be a bit beat up. Very sandy, which can be a pain if you don't want your clubs all scratched up. Nice putting green which is very representative of what you'll find on the course. The greens always seem to be in good shape and are one of the more difficult aspects of the golf course.

#1 appears to be a straight hole, but a nice draw off the tee helps the angle to a slightly elevated shallow green, as trees from the left poke out into your ball flight from the tee box. A couple of hidden FW bunkers have to be avoided as well. I generally hit a FW wood off the tee due to a number of trees on the right, and have maybe 130 in. Green is split down the middle from front to back by a ridge, and finding the proper side can help the putting stats. Club selection is tough for the 2nd shot because the green is so shallow. A miss long and you're dead, and if you hit the wrong side of the ridge, a tough putt awaits you.

#2 is a cool downhill par 3 with water on the right, bunkers on the left. Man up for this one!! While the bailout would be left, the green is narrow, and you won't have much of it to work with out of those bunkers, with water looming behind the pin. Short is NOT bad if the pin is in front, and keeps most of the trouble out of play.

#3 is a demanding uphill dogleg right par 4. An good accurate tee shot to a narrowing fairway leaves you perhaps 150 yards in, but plays longer. The green is large, but it's tough to determine distance because you can't see the surface of the green. A back left pin position is a tough spot no matter where you put your tee shot.

#4 is a winding par 5 with OB left, and a bunker staring you right in your face. The bunker is a good aim point. I think it's about 270 to it. I don't think a driver is really necessary off this tee. Finding the FW more important, so you can hit an accurate 2nd to get to the left hand side of the fairway. It makes for an easier approach shot. I seem to always hit too far to the right on the 2nd shot here, which gives a funky angle to the green.

#5 is interesting, but I think if they expanded the FW it would be more fun. OB left, dogleg left, it's not a long hole. I suppose you could hit a driver off the tee over the FW bunker at the corner, but we usually just hit a FW wood off the tee. The problem is that you're almost always to the right of the fairway in a small valley because the fairway is so narrow at that point. It really needs to be about 10-15 yards wider in the landing area. At any rate, you'll have a downhill tee shot for your 2nd to a large green.

#6 is a par 3 that has 2 greens, both of which slope severly from back to front. Don't underestimate the amount of break on these greens! The shorter green is maybe 160 yards, all carry over the hazard. The longer is about 180-200 yard shot, uphill, with OB behind the green! Not sure if they've taken the back green out of circulation, because I don't think I've played it back there in 6 or 7 rounds.

#7 is a fun downhill par 4, sharp dogleg right (about a 60 degree angle). The really big hitters can take it over the trees at the corner, but most of us mere mortals will play down the fairway to the left of the 150 marker. If you can hit a baby cut you can really get the ball sliding down the fairway. You won't need driver if you don't plan on cutting the corner.

#8 is a par 5 which could be improved greatly. It's a dogleg right that has it's "corner" blocked by a bunch of really tall trees. There is absolutely NO way to hit a tee shot in the fairway that has a clear view of the green, or really any shot that you can use more than a 5 or 6 iron. That's annoying. You're really better off aiming way left (left of the bunkers) and having a clear shot, even if you plan on laying up. They need to chop down the left grouping of trees at the corner. This will reward a well placed tee shot, but still block those who hit their tee shot right of the fairway. The approach shot is an uphill look. It's a big green, so get the laser range finder out!

#9 is a downhill tee shot. From the back tees, the bushes behind you can actually be in your way. Silly. I wonder if some superintendents never play golf on their own courses! Just a trimming back there would help greatly. Also, the trees on the right are very much in your way from the top most tees. The need to trim those back a bit, as the original design never had that problem (trees DO grow, ya know!). Everyone ends up teeing on the left side of the box because of this. A good tee shot can bounce down the fairway and leave you with a short iron in.

#10 is a dogleg right. A driver isn't necessary, but if you do pull it out, you'll have to cut the corner, or otherwise risk driving through the fairway. Another elevated very deep green makes for a difficult approach.

#11 is a cool par 5. You really need to make 3 good shots just to get on the green. The tee shot used to be tighter, but they've removed a tree or two. You're elevated, and a good one will leave you 250 or so out, over water. I think once I hit a good enough drive to even consider going for it, but lots of H2O in front of you. Therefore, a shot to the left of the pond is in order. Note how far the water juts out into the fairway, and play it safe. The approach is a narrow one, but the hole isn't so long that you can't score here if you hit some good shots.

#12 is an uphill par 3 that plays 10 yards longer than the yardage. A very big green (they're almost all big at Greystone) with bunkers on the right.

#13. IMO, this is the hardest hole on the course. Elevated tee, OB left, water right, FW bunker on the left. You don't necessarily have to hit driver here, but it helps for the 2nd shot. If you're lucky enough to find the fairway (Oh, did I mention the wind always seems to be blowing hard up there?!?!), you'll still have 130-150 left into an oddly shaped green with water in front. Don't be short, because the ball will hit the bank and it WILL be wet, and you'll still have a tough shot after your drop!

#14, par 4, scoreable. I think this hole was my first holeout ever from the fairway. While the right hand side is the pond, there's a fair amount of room to the left... more than it looks like off the tee. Finally, you can see the surface of the green from the fairway!

#15 is a nice long par 5. Split the upright trees with your driver and you still have a FW wood and a good iron into one of the smaller greens. Pay attention on the 2nd shot to the left side, as it's all OB there which you can't see from where you're at.

Grestyone hypes the last 3 as the "Best Finish In Golf"... eh, not so sure about that.

#16 is a big downhill par 3. WAyyyy downhill. And the green is surrounded by water on all sides. It's VERY wide (must be a good 50 yards wide), but fairly shallow. #16 is ok, it's a fair hole, and fun to play since you don't see things like this all the time. Club selection and a well struck ball is the most important goal on this hole, especially since you're completely exposed and the wind always seems to be blowing hard. The hole usually plays to around 160, but get a strong wind in your face and it's more like 180-190.

#17 is a poorly designed hole. They almost have it right, except for the design of the fairway. The fairway is in tiers, and the problem is that you can hit the ball on the left side of the fairway, and if it hits the bank of the tier just so, it will go all the way across the fairway to the right. Now, this might not normally a problem except for the fact that there a LAKE THERE. C'mon. I shouldn't be punished for hitting the ball in the fairway. WAAYYY too much luck involved. The hole is hard enough as it is without introducing a flip of a coin in there. I don't hit driver here, even off the back tees. If you're lucky enough to find the fairway, a severely uphill 2nd shot awaits. You CANNOT be short of the green, else it hits the bank and rolls back into the water.

#18 has potential, but I think it's poorly designed as well. Anything 1 foot right of the FW rolls down the hill into the lake, unless you're "lucky" enough to land in a divot. You really can't hit driver here as it's very possible to drive it through the fairway (unless you're playing the tips). Then you've got the big tree to the left of the FW, and the FW rolls to the right. So basically you have about a 15 yard wide bowling alley in which to hit to. What they need to do is to lose the tree, and widen and level out the fairway by about 10 yards to the left. I mean, you STILL have a difficult approach shot way downhill over water and rocks to a shallow green! It is impressive looking, though.

All in all, I like Greystone. The staff is friendly, the cart girls cute, the course in good condition. It's just that there are better holes than #17 and 18 to be found here.

Overall, course was in great shape for so early in the year.Greens ran pretty quick, especially since there were heavy rains the previous day.Only downside was the fact that the foursome ahead of us wouldnt let our twosome go through,so we ended up just skipping ahead of them.Would love to see Greystone keep their prices in the $40 range throughout the summer!!

Greystone is one of my favorites on LMG. I've played about 70 percent of the courses on LMG and Greystone is in my top 5 favorites. Very challenging course great conditions from tee boxes to fairways to the greens. My golf buddies and i saved it for our last round of the season got on for 25 bucks "last min" rate. The pace of play was very slow because it was the last nice day of the year so every golfer and they're mother was playing besides that one negative it is a great course. And im always willing to make the drive to play it. The last three holes are worth all the hype they will leaving you wanting more. Or if your not the most accurate shot maker you'll be wanting more golf balls. Overall Greystone is a great golf course and my two cents is play it i have not met one person who has not like this course, and once you play it your standards for a nice golf course will suddenly become higher.

This is one of my favorite courses in the Metro area. The multiple tee locations make it playable for all handicaps. If you can't control your driver don't play from the back. And my advice to the fellow that says hit a 4 iron off the tee on 18 is to quit playing from the womens tees. Great staff and one of the best 19th holes around. Cudo's to the Green Superintendent and his staff the course is always in good condition.

Great Course, Great People and service.

To the reviewer who posted you can only hit your driver on 5-6 holes, why would you play the course at 6200 yrds, from the grey tees?
Greystone even has grey/black that puts you at the tips on aprox 14 holes and the greys on the others ( hole 8, hole 16, hole 18).

The tips are aprox 6800 and the grey/blacks are about 6500.

I played the day after 3 inches of rain and their crew had the course in unbelievable shape.

Go back and try it from the tips and bomb away.

Greystone is a slight disappointment for me. I am a big, big fan of Jerry Matthews designs and this is at the lower end of my list. Conditions, clubhouse and service were nice, my issues were with the design. We played one set up from the tips and you can probably only safely hit driver off 5-6 holes, all others were a 4 iron to the fairway. The last 3 holes, and I know its a big marketing point for the course, were a letdown. 16 is very nice, reminds me of one of the later par 3's at Buck's Run. 17 you have to hit a long iron off the tee and flirt with the water just to get a mid iron to a raised green. 18 requires a bombed driver to a very narrow fairway with certain death all along the right. Another hole where youve got to play safe and hit iron. Greensite is quite shallow and if you come up an inch short the rocks bounce everything into the junk. Artificial and frustrating, but I guess there's satisfaction getting through those holes even par... Overall its a nice place, but I doubt I'd make another visit.

Played this course for the first time on 9/18/08. Wow...what a great course. The 3 finishing holes alone would make me come back to play this course again. Tight fairways, blind shots made for a tough day on the course. It beat me this day but I will be back for my revenge.

Unfortunately, the beverage cart didn't come around nearly as much as I'd like...i think we only saw her 1x/9 holes. Otherwise a great course for a great price.

Greystone once again has proven to be a top notch course this season, which easily rivals Shepherds Hollow in my book (as if that matters too anyone). The course has remained in fantastic condition with the cooler summer temps for sure. They have appeared to have made the course abit tougher and less forgiving of errant drives by growing the rough longer on some of the tighter holes? That being said first time players here should opt for mid irons off most tees and leave their drivers in the bag. Best advice to shoot low here, "DO WHATEVER POSSIBLE TO STAY OUT OF THE THICK ROUGH" Contrary to some reports almost all sprinkler heads are tagged with yardage. 16!,17!,18! THE TOUGHEST 3 FINISHING HOLES IN ALL OF MICHIGAN GOLF! can be beaten from the tips with 4 to 6I from the tees on 17 and 18 which will leave most players with 120-150yd approaches to the greens. Last bit of useless advice " Empty your bladder before the 16 tee!! hahaha Ern
