What's this?
I am not a serious golfer. In fact, I am very new to the game, but I have played this course five times in the last three weeks because the price was low. Rightfully so! The greens are in horrible shape, there is too much granite in the gorund which causes the balls to ricochet all over the place, the sandtraps are hard as a rock, kids are always walking around and playing on the course, people walking their dogs, coyotes act like they are the official guardians, and the ball washers don't ever have water in them. I wont even talk about the bathroom and the water coolers. I won't pay $20 to play here. I went to Mystery Valley which is far better for $26.

I am new to the game and found Southland to be an excellent course on which to practice. That is until Monday July 20. The rate I was paying was surprisingly hiked over the weekend and the GM was not very friendly at all. He forced me to drive around to Myster Valley. That course while slightly higher in cost was worth the money. The greens are in wonderful shape and there were no Cyotes walking around.
I'd like to thank the new GM for forcing me to look at his competition. My three friends and I will gladly dole out the extra money to play on a course that is in good shape. I am also considering paying the $900 to become a member. Its ashame because Southland could use the income from memberships and fees to improve the quality of the course.

Last played here about 3 months ago and said "nevermore", but love the layout so returned today. Tee boxes and fairways are in average to good condition, but the greens?????
Approximately six greens are getting to be in good shape (little weed but not too bad), six tempoary greens ( regular greens to be open this Saturday), and six greens absolutely awful! There is no excuse for crabgrass in the sand traps!!! Forget about toilet facilities on course as they are non-existant. Take pleanty of water as none available on course except hole 5 & 12 (tee)sometimes. $20 is still too much , but as I said; I love the layout. If it keeps going, I would guess that it would be playable - value for money- by end August

I played this course for the 1st time 06/27/2009, and was very dissapointed in the conditions of the greens. There was only 1 water cooler on the whole course. The restroom on the course was ridiculous, and wouldn't recommend and animal using it, someone should call the health department on this restroom. I see that they are trying to make renovations to the landscape and greens, maybe in time the course will be of better quality.

I played here a few months ago and figured the course would only improve with time, but ended up being dead wrong. The greens have actually somehow gotten worse, with more weeds and bumps than before. The fairways were driveway-like and there was only one water cooler on the whole course, which only had ice. I paid 15 dollars and cannot complain too much because the service is good, I just don't understand why they cannot make this nicely laid out course at least playable.

Two months ago I was against all of the Southland bashers. I hate to say it and it’s hard to believe but the course conditions have actually deteriorated in the last two months. The Manager is a nice guy but this bad course is getting worse. The price range should be $10.00 - $15.00. Anything over $15 is a waste of money.

Ok I have played this course off and on since its "hayday" back nearly 10 years ago. Other than the staff being nice, you just rally cant say anything good about this course.

I read one review stating "you get what you pay for", that would only be true here if you paid $10.00 or less. Though I am not a "serious" golfer, just a hack, to state that this course is a good value at $22.00... well that is a stretch. You could easily pay an additional $8-10 dollars, drive 5-10 miles further and find PLENTY of FAR NICER courses listed here on LMTT.

Until whover owns this once great track, starts to do some at least mediocre investing in this course, it's just in too poor condition to pay anymore than the price of a couple of buckets at your local driving range. Truly a shame... but TRUE!!

This course is horrible. What a dog track! The cart path is in better shape that the greens, and they are cracked and broken. Folks don't waste your time nor a single red cent playing this cow pasture. The greens have been jacked up for a few years now as well as the rest of the course. There is no sand in the bunkers and they are hard as a rock. They must have hired a plumber to manage the course because it is obvious that the guy they call the greens keeper has no clue.

Played this course on Saturday (6/13) first time. We only paid $19 per person including cart fee and spending much more on this course would be over-charged. There were still 3 temporary greens and the other greens were also not in a very good condition. The fairways were in fair conditions and on one hole we even had to tee off from temporary tee boxes. There were not service cart on the course and only one drinking water container (right were 5th and 15th hole cross) which was not there on our front nine. If you play there make sure you have enough liquids with you. We will probably not go back to this course.

You get what you pay for. I don't understand why so many people are surprised that this is course is in rather sorry shape, it's cheap as heck people! My buddy and I played this last weekend for $22, if anyone knows any better full length courses for that kind of money in the area I would love to know.

Yes the greens are in pretty sorry shape. The bunkers are somehow worse. Parts of the course seem to wind through an unfinished construction site. Yes this course is a far cry from the best in Atlanta but if you are a less than serious golfer or on a strict budget I don't think it could hurt to give Southland a try.

Oh and one last comment, BRING YOUR OWN WATER! I almost died of heat exhaustion because the course has no free drinking water or cart girl!

I cant really complain since I found a golf course 30 minutes from home for only $20, but the greens at this course were like putting on gravel. The tee boxes and fairways are great and the staff was extremely nice, but you could three put from 10 feet out with the way your ball bounces across these greens. If they get these greens together this would be a great course.

OK, yes this course has actually gotten worse this year, I would not have thought it possible. Southland has the worse greens in Metro Atlanta and the worsst I have ever seen.

The course has potential and used to be nice, but employing a groundskeeper would not hurt.

That being said, if you go, you *have* to get cart #5, it's speed governer is broken. This cart will do 35MPH on level ground. It's the only thing that made the day any fun -- but be careful, golf carts are not meant to go 35, there were a few times the wheels tipped...fortunately I had at 310 pounder riding, so the wheels quickly went back on the path. Man, it's like riding a 4 wheeler while goin' mud boggin', ain't nothing like that to turn a gray day sunny.

Ok people we get it. Southland is in bad shape. How many ways can different people say it? Here's an idea, how about post something when Southland actually gets their act together! Don't bother posting another negative comment until the course begins to improve. We all know it's bad because most of us have read the 20 previous bad reviews.

My boss paid $15 each for us to play. The gentleman, Andy, at the clubhouse might be one of the friendliest people we talked to, unforunately, that did not make up for the poor shape of the course and course layout.

Make sure to bring plenty of drinks as there is no place on the course to stop and no cart girl selling beverages / food. Don't try to stop at the clubhouse at the turn because the clubhouse is no where near the turn. You have to go back to 1 or all the way to 18 to get back to the clubhouse.

Make sure to eat / pack snacks before you get to the course as they offer nominal snack foods, but no sandwiches or grill.

The bathroom on the course was completely disgusting.

It could be a good course, but not in the near future. We played last year and it seemed like a nice course with decent greens.

The greens are now overrun with weeds and lack of grass. You have problems recognizing if something is a sand trap or a drained out water hazed in the middle of a couple of the holes. The course does not do anything to stop kids getting out of school from walking through the golf course to get home.

Overall, maybe worth $15, but make sure you bring plenty of drinks and food as none will be provided on the course.

If you are a lower handicap player, this course's condition may irritate you and not be worth the $15. For beginners, it's a good cheap course if you're in Stone Mountain.

They should rename this course Wasteland, that's what it feels like. There's more sand on the green than in the bunkers, and more wild grass growing in the bunkers than on the greens (not to mention an entire greenside bunker on the 18th hole is now submerged in their lake). Make sure you bring something to drink since there's 1 cooler on the entire course, and the first time we passed by it wasn't even there. Not that I would even drink it, you'd probably contract Dengue Fever, ebola, or worse. I don't know how they can even try to charge $30 with a straight face...I would pay maybe $8 to play this course, and would still be mad I wasted 4 hours of my time.

On the plus side, the course has somewhat of an exotic feel - this is what a course in Iraq, Zimbabwe, Burma, or Afghanistan probably feels like, except worse since a golf trip to those places you'd at least get a passport stamp.

I agree the "greens" should not be called greens but if your working on your game its better than spending $15-$20 dollars at the driving range. I have been playing this course for a few weeks now but I'm still amazed by the people that continue to trash it. Read the reviews and make a decision. What did you think you were getting for less than twenty dollars......Bears Best??

Southland used to be a fun course. Now it's been let go, and it's horrible. The greens are garbage. They shouldn't even be aloud to call them 'greens'. This course has been going downhill for quite some time, now it's dead. It may be cheap, but it's not worth the money.

Southland used to be the the best kept secret in Atlanta golf. The course was wonderful - everything you could ask for at a great price. About three years ago things started going downhill. Though I still love the course layout, I would no longer recommend playing there to anyone. The coures is shabby, the greens non-existent, the bathroom at the ninth is filthy without water, the clubhouse has gone to seed. If you are in the area, Mystery Valley (just down the road) is far - far better value. Would rate the conditions/greens as 0 if possible.

Played Southland for the first time in over a year on April 22 hoping that things had improved. There literally was no grass on the majority of the greens. I had been told the greens had just been aerated and sanded, but I hadn't been told there was literally no grass on the greens. The entire left side of one green had just been tilled and looked ready to be planted with vegetables! The tee boxes hadn't been mowed in days and the fairways were basically the same. It's a shame this course has fallen into such sad shape. At one time this was a beautiful course and lots of fun to play.

On April 11th, three of us played this ONCE good course and it is in BAD BAD condition now. The pro (semi) told us that the greens are a little rougn and the greens are about 2 weeks from being perfect. He also gaved us a coupon (he wrote it on a score card) to come back in May (two for one). When we began to play, we didn't see a green, we saw DIRT and a few pieces of grass on what was the green. We thought one or two holes were going to be bad...ALL were.
I think this is the same group that once owned Atlanta International (now closed) and Lakeview (now closed)both run down before closing.
Don't play this course, unless you can play first and pay later.

OK we all know that greens are in tough shape and you should shave a point off your score to make allowances. But for $15 on a week day with the LMG discount you can not beat it in the Atlanta area. I paid $20 for a bucket of balls the last time I went to the driving range.

The course lay out is unique and there are a variety of shots tested. You can go from a wide open fairway to a narrow woods type shot. The streams, natural rock outcroppings or ponds that come into play on most holes make for an interesting course and forces you to use all your clubs. It helps if you either play with one of the regulars or play it a second time as there are a number of blind shots into the greens. Built in a housing development that did not quite make it to completion there are a few holes that necessitate going over some gravel and around a construction site. The club house in nothing to write home about but the staff is friendly and the carts work fine. The views of the back side of Stone Mountain on the first and last few holes are really nice.

I played with my son on the afternoon of 4/9 and we completed 18 holes in about 4 hours. We rarely caught up with the group in front us and did not have anyone come up on us. If you are a low handicap player I can understand some frustration, but for my beginner son and his frugal dad it was a great day and value.
