Pine Knolls was designed in the Donald Ross-Ellis Maples tradition --with risk-reward situations that favor the intelligent golfer. The front nine is relatively flat; the back nine has more elevation changes. The most difficult hole is #15, a 336-yard, par 4, which forces the average golfer to lay-up on their first shot in order to have a clear shot at the green and a possible birdie opportunity. Two natural ponds and three creeks come into play on five holes, but there are no long or difficult carries.
